Utah Saints still rocking after 20 years

January 31, 2011 Entertainment No Comments

Popular British DJ/production partnership Utah Saints are celebrating two decades of music-making and dancefloor destruction this year.

2011 marks 20 years since the duo of Jez Williams and Tim Garbutt first got together in their adopted hometown of Leeds, West Yorkshire. It wasn’t long before they were being hailed as “the first true stadium house band” by KLF frontman Bill Drummond, following a string of top 10 chart hits.

While it was 1991’s ‘What Can You Do For Me’ that first propelled them towards superstardom, they would record a bigger hit with 1992’s ‘Something Good’. Thanks to a distinctive sample from Kate Bush’s ‘Cloudbusting’, the single became a top five hit in the UK singles chart. It has gone on to become one of the most enduring dance hits of the last two decades, and was re-released to much acclaim with brand new remixes in 2008.

Much has changed in dance music over the last two decades, but Utah Saints are still going strong. Since the release of ‘Something Good 2008’ Jez and Tim have been working non-stop, packing out clubs and winning a whole new generation of fans with their singles and remixes.

November 2010 saw the release of a brand new single on their own label, Sugarbeat. ‘Getting Better’ was a loud electrohouse anthem featuring vocals from Lost Prophets’ singer Ian Watkins. It was supported by a free 30-minute DJ mix, which the duo gave away free on their Soundcloud page.

Utah Saints set to taste chart success again after 20 years

May 13, 2011

Veteran dance music duo Utah Saints look set to taste chart success again thanks to a 20th anniversary remake of one of the biggest global hits.

Leeds-based producers Jez and Tim first recorded the Eurhythmics and Gwen Guthrie-sampling “What Can You Do For Me” on an Atari ST in the Spring of 1991. By the summer of that year it had became a worldwide “stadium house”  rave smash, propelling them towards the higher echelons of dance music.

20 years on, the duo decided to remake the hit that put them on the map. Having previously remixed their other huge hit, “Something Good”, a few years back, it made sense to mark two decades in dance music with a brand new version “What Can You Do For Me”.

Already, the new version has picked up support from some of the world’s biggest radio and club DJs, including Annie Mac, Pete Tong, Steve Smart and Kissy Sell-Out.

Remixes of the new Utah Saints version of “What Can You Do For Me” come from new boy Doorly, jungle veterans Drumsound & Bassline Smith and rave heavyweight Herve.

Robbie Craig signs to MN2S

May 10, 2011

Well-travelled vocalist Robbie Craig has joined the MN2S Agency’s growing live roster of artists.

Now an acclaimed solo performer and songwriter in his own right. Craig first rose to prominence in the late 1990s speed garage scene.

Craig signed his first record deal at the age of 16 and released his first solo single in 1991 – the pop-flavoured “Bad Attitude” on Polydor. A number of singles followed, before he began to take on more session work. One of his most prominent performances came as a backing singer on the 1994 Boys Inc debut album, “Boys Inc”.

By the late 1990s he’d become involved in the fast-rising British speed garage scene, and leant his distinctive vocals to a string of underground hits.

But it was in 2000 that he really hit the big time. He teamed up with Artful Dodger and Craig David to pen global dancefloor smash “Woman Trouble”. He’s since gone on to write and record for and with Victoria Beckham (“I Wish”), Shola Ama (“I’m Yours”), Take That’s Gary Barlow and members of Jamiroquai.

Craig released an acclaimed solo album, the New Jack Swing and R&B-inspired “Soul Alchemy”, to wide critical acclaim in 2008.

Craig is being represented by MN2S for worldwide live bookings.

April 7, 2011

Legendary Chicagoan house DJ and vocalist Ron Carroll may have produced the biggest track of his illustrious career – but it won’t be out for some time yet.

CR2 Records have signed “Don’t Be Afraid”, the Chicagoan’s massive collaboration with MYNC and Dan Castro, but no release date has yet been confirmed. Rumours suggest the tune, which fuses classic piano house with Carroll’s soaring vocals, will drop in the summer.

The record is widely regarded as one of the biggest tunes of the 2011 Miami Winter Music Conference – usually a good indication of potential worldwide dancefloor and crossover success. MN2S welcomes Niles Mason

January 28, 2011

International agency MN2S have welcomed singer-songwriter Niles Mason to their growing family of artists.

The American is best known for his 2010 collaboration with David Guetta and Afrojack, ‘Louder Than Words’. The track became a club anthem, hit sales charts across Europe and received widespread radio support. Niles has performed the song live many times in Europe and the USA, including a very special appearance at the 2010 Miami Winter Music Conference. He recently completed recording another would-be dancefloor hit, ‘Born To Fly’, with producers Discofly.

For all his dancefloor success, Niles is a much more than just a vocalist. His first break into the music industry was as a songwriter. He signed a publishing deal with Warner Chappell in 2009, a move that brought him to the attention of contemporary soul star Toni Braxton. Niles wrote ‘Yesterday’, the first track on her 2010 album ‘Pulse’.

2011 looks set to be a big year for the former Boston choirboy and American Idol contestant. He’s set to work again with Parisian house star and L’Oreal spokesman David Guetta. Having recently made his UK debut in Liverpool, he’s looking to perform more in Britain and Europe.
