Father’s Day in the Wild

It is that time of the year again when you show your dad how much he means to you. You know, when you remember how he got up late into the night and changed your diapers and cleaned up your mess. Father’s Day is for you to show appreciation for all the times your father made your milk bottles every two hours at night just after you were born because your mother was too exhausted to think straight, let alone wake up.

If your father is a man’s man then what better way to show him how much you dig him by taking him on a safari somewhere deep in nature where Kudu, the Big Five and a droning 4×4 will take him back to the days, pre-diapers, milk bottles and two-hour sleep cycles. Father’s Day is typically filled with socks, handkerchiefs and soap-on-a-rope, so take that one step further. Throw in a voucher for awesome Kruger National Park tours that will get him away from the city and back to nature for some serious relaxing time.

The Kruger National Park is home to some of Africa’s most beautiful wild animals, including thousands of African elephants. These impressive creatures are the largest terrestrial mammals in the world, and are also known for being highly intelligent. Sadly, the oldest Kruger Park elephant, known as Duke, passed away this month, at the ripe old age of fifty-five.

Tourists on Kruger Park safaris were always on the lookout for Duke, and the rangers who knew him speak fondly of his gentle nature. Duke was one of the Kruger National Park’s “Emerging Tuskers”, and spent his days roaming the southern areas of the reserve, between Lower Sabie and Crocodile Bridge. Last year the elephant was fitted with a tracking collar so that Kruger Park rangers could monitor his movements more closely. Here are some more interesting facts about the famous Kruger Park elephant:

June 28, 2010 Environment No Comments

With the 2010 soccer World Cup in full swing, many entrepreneurs are cashing in temporarily stocking merchandise like flags, football scarves and shirts, and of course the ubiquitous vuvuzela. However, the soccer World Cup tribute being offered by Il Vinaio restaurant in Arizona is proving difficult to swallow – owner Cameron Selogie has sparked both curiosity and outrage among his patrons by serving lion burgers. That’s right, for a price of $21 customers can sink their teeth into a hamburger that, as we would say in South Africa “roars with flavour”.
