January 21, 2010 News No Comments

One might think that our job is fairly dangerous as we have to drive in crazy traffic amongst road rage individuals, deal with angry co workers and deathly amounts of work and then come home and tend to a hungry, tired family. As dangerous as these tasks might seem to us, they are nothing compared to the dangerous jobs of some individuals. These jobs need to be done and someone has to do it. From bomb squads to even farmers, there are some jobs out there that you wouldn’t realise contain a large risk.

One of the world’s most dangerous jobs is that of a mine worker. Even with all the mens workwear and various safety measurements carried out, one can place themselves in an immense amount of danger when working under ground and thousands of people travel many metres underground daily to perform their job. South Africa in particular has one of the highest fatality rates in the mining world, despite all their safety measures. This dangerous job is a result of limited air supply in the surrounding area, risk of being trapped underground as well as obvious health risks.

Do you wish to cut down trees for a living? Then being a logger could result in you involving yourself in one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. This job has its obvious such as being crushed by a tree but it seems that the number of fatalities caused by workers being killed by their own tools is just as high. The high uncertainty and risk of this job makes it high on the danger list.

Believe it or not, a career that tops the dangerous jobs list is working as a farmer!  This fatality rate is owing to the fact that in many cases, farmers have died from being electrocuted by lightening and this is a big risk when working outdoors in unpredictable conditions. The approximated fatality rate of farmers lies at about 37 and this means that it is actually dangerous to take a job as a farmer. Who knew that working on the land could be so risky?

Many might think that being a truck driver is a relaxing job with no real danger involved but as truck drivers spend all of their time on the road during the day and even through the night, there are many risks that come with this dangerous job. There is a high risk of being involved in a road accident as well as the danger of hijackers as well as the possibility of falling asleep on at the wheel or driving through bad weather conditions means that a truck driver is at risk of being injured or killed on the job.

These are only some of the most dangerous jobs out there, other dangerous careers include fisherman (which is currently known as the most dangerous job) pilots, steel workers, refuse collectors and power line installers
