Scientific achievements are the fuel of humanity, allowing the world to revolve unabated by diseases and issues that could greatly harm the entire population of the world. Without certain breakthroughs, we would all still be under the threat of smallpox, polio, bird flu and other crippling problems. The American Society of Microbiology is one organisation that rewards and notes scientific achievements on the timeline of global-scale breakthroughs. The members of the professional organisation include scientists who study viruses, bacteria, fungi, algae and protozoa; some members have accomplished some of the most significant scientific achievements of the last decade. Through regulatory affairs, they conduct studies and provide journals of science for the world to research. Now the ASM is ready to reward the worlds current great scientific achievements; book your places for the 2012 Awards Laureates in science.

The Abbott Award in Clinical and Diagnostics Immunology is one of the more important awards in scientific achievement and it went to the University of Pittsburgh’s Bruce S. Rabin M.D, PhD for his work on prevention of disease and research into vaccines. For Dr. Rabin, ‘prevention is better than cure’ as he continues to live by this scientific achievement quote. The bioMérieux Sonnenwirth Award for work in varied fields, like a pharmacovigilance job and related topics, is rewarded to leaders of clinical microbiology and its application as a career; it was awarded to Susan E. Sharp, MS, PhD the director of microbiology at Kaiser Permanente Northwest.

The most sought after award from the ASM is a scientific achievement in and of its own right, the Abbott-ASM Lifetime Achievement Award is one that honours the on-going and sustained contributions to the field of microbiology. The latest claim to this scientific achievement is the Distinguished Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine, Stuart B. Levy, MD. To ensure that the latest scientific achievement is rewarded the ASM continues to reward those deserving pioneers in microbiology. With an addition incentive to perform, scientific achievements will continue to happen because those that bring them about feel appreciated.
