Military Women Stand Strong on the Frontlines

May 2, 2012 Current Affairs No Comments

Despite only recently becoming a topical issue in the mainstream media, military women have existed for at least 4000 years. Indeed one of the most famous women in military combat died a martyr and received sainthood; Joan of Arc. Today however it’s important to look at the modern role of women in the military, US or otherwise, because unfortunately this complex subject is linked to war and the psychological effects war has. Using the Vietnam War as an example, many thousands of men came home after the brutality and were forever scarred; how will this be different for women.

Firstly, women military uniforms comprise of more than ladies safety shoes; because of the unique physique of a women compared to a man, could it be more challenging to create a uniform that adequately ensures a women’s safety and is it easier or harder than doing the same for me? There are all sorts of unique and interesting questions that come into consideration. A 1994 policy in the US banned women from the frontlines of battle, but now there is a new policy coming into effect on a six month trial that is allowing women into battalion squads (those squads traditionally on the front).

When womens workwear is a pair of military boots and a weapon, you know it takes the bravest of the brave to actively volunteer for the frontlines; we should respect these fearless women in military jackets for their achievements. The new policy is part of the process of evolving modern military combat which includes many other forward thinking policies changing the old typical ways. However the latest military clothing for women is intended to be just as efficient for safety as the men’s so you can be sure that although this is a trial, every legitimate precaution is going to be taken. The trial starts on the 14th of May and we should stand by these brave military women as they charge into battle.
