A Malta Holiday in the Ancient Walled City of Mdina

December 15, 2011 Travel and tourism No Comments

If you’re looking for exotic location without the hassle of a sprawling urban landscape, perhaps you should take a Malta holiday. If you’re looking especially for mystical adventure, then the ancient walled city of Mdina might compel you enough for a visit. Currently the main city is only open to its 300 citizens, emergency personal and wedding participants; the secrecy of this ancient city is enough of a Malta holiday package to get me excited. Ancient Mediterranean history is full of forts, wars and knights; everything someone would want from an historical holiday. Many Malta hotels actually happen to be repurposed castles and forts making the cultural experience well worth remembering.

Mdina is the old capital city of Malta and considering that it’s a small wonder it’s still as exclusive as it is; capitals tend to be bustling centres of the country they are in. It is situated on a hill in the middle of Malta, no doubt chosen for its strategic importance in ancient battles. While a cheap Malta holiday deal can be a challenge to spot, a rich cultural experience is guaranteed with almost 7000 years of history. Dubbed the ‘Silent City’ by inhabitants and visitors, Mdina may not provide luxury accommodation like the Palace Hotel Malta is famous for.

Mdina was first inhabited around 700 BC by the Phoenicians who knew it as Maleth. With its maximum distance from the sea and its height, Mdina was an important strategic position in war and has been from BC eras up until World War 2. Funny that the Apostle St.Paul decided upon Mdina for his all inclusive holiday to Malta when he was shipwrecked on the island, as least according to legend. Medieval lore shows that the walled city passed to the Order of Knights of the Hospital of St.John of Jerusalem in 1530 AD; quite a mouthful of a name.
Today Mdina is fascinatingly secretive which only adds to its mystic charm. Not to mention the beautiful location, the ancient history of the walled city is compelling. If you decide a Malta holiday is next on your bucket list, make sure Mdina is one of your stops

Inflation Takes Time Off on a Malta Holiday

April 23, 2012

If the idea of a Malta holiday strikes you as something that might cost you an arm and a leg, a recent study conducted by Marks & Spencer UK revealed it’s actually one of the few places in the world that was not affected by worldwide inflation. Of the 10 commonwealth countries surveyed, Malta holiday packages came in second behind Cyprus with an inflation rate of a mere 0.08% since last year. The increase of price for an all inclusive holiday to Malta was limited to a single solitary pound; this put the total at £1,230 which is only £31 more than the total of a Cyprus holiday. With resorts such as the Westin Dragonara and beaches of pristine blue, one can’t go wrong with holiday accommodation in Malta.

The list made mention of the other countries involved, but the only important figure was the sharp difference in inflation increases; while Malta held tight at an amazing 0.08%, New Zealand shot up an unfortunate 8%. Despite a sharp 13.65% increase in pricing, excluding flight Kenya cost a mere £998 which made it the best value for money but far from as luxurious as a holiday in a villa in Malta; one cannot really compete with the sheer opulence of the Topaz Hotel Malta.

Many people have eyes on what the Royal Family decide to do at the closing of the Diamond Jubilee with some pundits claiming there may be a holiday package in Malta that mimics any similarly planned trip to the island nation. Although there has also been an increase in worldwide inflation, it is clear that within the Commonwealth favourable exchange rates have allowed positive deals for a holiday in Malta to surface and offer great value for money. Be it a hotel or an apartment, a holiday in Malta has been in vogue since the 60s and is now being cited as the Mediterranean’s Hollywood with Brad Pitt having shot his latest film there as well as Tom Cruise allegedly showing interest in property. With Hollywood looking to live and holiday in Malta, it’s impossible to ignore the sheer value for money that a vacation to Malta can offer.

For an Inexpensive Holiday Head to Malta, Cyprus or Kenya

April 10, 2012

inexpensive holidayRising fuel costs, air passenger duty and inflation mean that holidays abroad are becoming increasingly expensive. Fortunately, there are a few holiday destinations that are moving against this trend by giving holiday makers a more inexpensive holiday alternative. According to a study of Britain’s ten most popular commonwealth destinations by Marks and Spencers, Malta and Cyprus are the best inflation busting and affordable holiday destinations respectively. Other inexpensive holiday destinations that fared well were Kenya, South Africa and Barbados.

The survey showed that the total cost of a Malta holiday, including flights and accommodation such as a Bugibba hotel, has only risen by €1.21 over the past year, an incredible feat when inflation is considered. Cyprus experienced a higher increase in costs, although overall it remains the most inexpensive commonwealth holiday for Britons at €1,454 for a week holiday. Malta followed close behind at €1,491. The comparatively low overall prices of European Commonwealth country is largely the result of the favourable exchange rates with the Euro. In contrast the non-Commonwealth nation of Barbados saw an overall increase of €188.

When flights are included, African nations fared well with Kenya coming out tops as the most inexpensive holiday destination, followed by Cyprus, South Africa and Malta. Overall, commonwealth countries show the greatest value for money and have the added advantage of short travelling time and cheap, regular flights. For example package holidays to Malta that offer affordable deals on luxurious accommodations such as the Westin Dragonara give sun worshippers the ideal inexpensive holiday.
