A Malta Holiday in the Ancient Walled City of Mdina
If you’re looking for exotic location without the hassle of a sprawling urban landscape, perhaps you should take a Malta holiday. If you’re looking especially for mystical adventure, then the ancient walled city of Mdina might compel you enough for a visit. Currently the main city is only open to its 300 citizens, emergency personal and wedding participants; the secrecy of this ancient city is enough of a Malta holiday package to get me excited. Ancient Mediterranean history is full of forts, wars and knights; everything someone would want from an historical holiday. Many Malta hotels actually happen to be repurposed castles and forts making the cultural experience well worth remembering.
Mdina is the old capital city of Malta and considering that it’s a small wonder it’s still as exclusive as it is; capitals tend to be bustling centres of the country they are in. It is situated on a hill in the middle of Malta, no doubt chosen for its strategic importance in ancient battles. While a cheap Malta holiday deal can be a challenge to spot, a rich cultural experience is guaranteed with almost 7000 years of history. Dubbed the ‘Silent City’ by inhabitants and visitors, Mdina may not provide luxury accommodation like the Palace Hotel Malta is famous for.
Mdina was first inhabited around 700 BC by the Phoenicians who knew it as Maleth. With its maximum distance from the sea and its height, Mdina was an important strategic position in war and has been from BC eras up until World War 2. Funny that the Apostle St.Paul decided upon Mdina for his all inclusive holiday to Malta when he was shipwrecked on the island, as least according to legend. Medieval lore shows that the walled city passed to the Order of Knights of the Hospital of St.John of Jerusalem in 1530 AD; quite a mouthful of a name.
Today Mdina is fascinatingly secretive which only adds to its mystic charm. Not to mention the beautiful location, the ancient history of the walled city is compelling. If you decide a Malta holiday is next on your bucket list, make sure Mdina is one of your stops

If the idea of a Malta holiday strikes you as something that might cost you an arm and a leg, a recent study conducted by Marks & Spencer UK revealed it’s actually one of the few places in the world that was not affected by worldwide inflation. Of the 10 commonwealth countries surveyed, Malta holiday packages came in second behind Cyprus with an inflation rate of a mere 0.08% since last year. The increase of price for an all inclusive holiday to Malta was limited to a single solitary pound; this put the total at £1,230 which is only £31 more than the total of a Cyprus holiday. Rising fuel costs, air passenger duty and inflation mean that holidays abroad are becoming increasingly expensive. Fortunately, there are a few holiday destinations that are moving against this trend by giving holiday makers a more inexpensive holiday alternative. According to a study of Britain’s ten most popular commonwealth destinations by Marks and Spencers, Malta and Cyprus are the best inflation busting and affordable holiday destinations respectively. Other inexpensive holiday destinations that fared well were Kenya, South Africa and Barbados.
