Kruger National Park Set for Massive Revamp
The tourism side of the Kruger National Park is set for a massive revamp that will change the way that visitors experience both the park and its facilities. The most notable changes will be in the upgrading and addition of accommodation facilities, food and catering, available activities, interpretive facilities and traffic control. The revamp is part of a countrywide sweep initiated by SA national Parks (SANParks), although Kruger National Park as South Africa’s flagship nature reserve will vanguard the change.
The general aim is to improve visitor experience, but there will also be a concentrated effort on attracting black visitors to the park. The park attracts around one million visitors each year, of which only 29.5% are black. Of these only 8.2% choose to stay overnight. It is vital that the Kruger National Park tours not only supports the surrounding communities, but reflects the broader population. This becomes increasingly important if one considers that only 15% of the country’s income is from the state coffer; the remaining 85% is income generated by Kruger National Park. In short, because the state is contributing less, the Kruger National Park safari holiday needs to be more attractive to the wider population in order to remain profitable. It’s also vital that the Kruger National Park develops a sustainable relationship with local communities, who rely on local tourism for livelihood.
One of the major changes will be the addition of a new Kruger National Park accommodation style. Two large hotels have already been planned, although they will conform to the Kruger’s conservation obligations. They are better described as lodges as they are low rise. Unlike the existing self catering accommodation, the lodges will offer full hotel services. New activities are also being planned for the Kruger National Park. Apart from 4 day Kruger Park safaris, additional activities like tours to rock-art sites, bicycle routes and high quality franchise food options are being considered.
