Expected Internet Trends For 2012

December 22, 2011 Technology No Comments

With the evolution of technology, the way access the information and the internet trends in usage change according to what we have available to us. With smart phones changing the way we do business and access our information from everywhere in the world and with almost every business having dedicated internet solutions to ensure their company is always active in the digital sphere advent of new technologies changing the way we do business in the coming year mean that lifestyle and internet usage trends will change. With these changes, there will always be new developments that need to happen to cope with the new trends of users in regards to security and delivery of services. These are some of the highlights of the internet trends predicted for 2012 and how we think the industry needs to change.

1)    Mobile, Mobile, Mobile – One of the internet usage trends that will continue well into 2012 is the preference for using mobile platforms for internet usage and staying in touch. Tablets and laptops will continue to outdo desktops and workers will more and more be working from remote locations and therefore utilising mobile internet more and more.

2)    Cloud Storage – Due to the cost implications of hosting your own servers on the premises and the necessity for 24/hr IT support a growing business internet trend will be to make use of the offsite services of cloud computing. While this enables the mobile trend of internet usage to increase at substantial rates, it also opens up the door for new and unique security threats which the industry is gearing up to combat. The ability to have information readily available through Wifi and 3G connections anywhere in the world will change the use of business internet, specifically from SMEs.

3)    Convergence – Already with companies having systems for managed ip pbx services to be able to use the internet connections for both data and voice, allowing communication through a single channel, all of this technology and the way business operates will attempt to converge further through a single medium. Mobile technology will incorporate cameras for digital cameras for video conferencing and even online cloud storage will offer a single place for complete data storage. Security companies will focus on backup fail safes for convergence systems, but convenience is a global trend that is making business more efficient.

These are three of the growing internet trends that we will see mass development for in 2012. Already the industry has begun the early stages of these three trends, but improved technology will cement these ideals and practices in 2012.

Graphene Technology Means Faster Communications

September 2, 2011

Less than 5 years ago, if I started talking to industry professionals regarding the graphene applications of the future in regards to the communications industry I would have gotten blank stares. After being discovered using sticky-tape (not kidding), this ultra thin, yet stable carbon structure is known not only to be the strongest material known to man, but has been said to have the potential to be the fastest and most stable data transmission material in future communications industry applications. Crystal clear international teleconferencing on business pbx systems and super lightweight and portable mobile handsets are maybe only 5-10 years away from being a reality, according to recent articles highlighting the potential of graphene.

Graphene was discovered in 2004, but since then scientists have been hard at work and made amazing headway in the development of the technology. Research on graphene and its various applications earned a Nobel Prize in Physics last year to Professors Geim and Novoselov for their work using the two dimensional material.  Graphene was discovered to be 100 times stronger than steel and at an atomic level is said to have a chicken-wire type structure. Their major discovery was that when graphene, when combined with other metallic nanostructures, has the capacity to 20 times increase its absorption of light and its conversion to electrical power. The main issue that scientists were working on though, is graphene’s low absorption rate and hence the combination with other materials. This groundbreaking work has been the collaboration between the universities of Manchester and Cambridge and has yielded the results of graphene research that can be used in the next wave of electronics and communication.

The Nature and Communications Journal has published all of the recent work done of graphene in its most recent issue and technologists worldwide are giving it a thorough read and showing increasing interest in the technology. Graphene is set to be the communications technology of the future and what it means for us is a faster home and business broadband solution, lightweight and stable mobile technologies and possibly many, many more graphene applications that the scientists of tomorrow are working on today.

Internet Statistics of France’s Online Usage

December 6, 2010

As the third largest broadband subscriber in Europe, one can expect internet statistics showing France’s internet usage to be quite high. In recent years there has been considerable demand for high bandwidth and improved fibre infrastructure. By keeping track of the usage via internet statistics France, especially those digital statistics relating to internet usage and gain greater insight into France’s digital world.

While DSL is the most used broadband access, using fibre optic cables is fast becoming a more substantial alternative. At present only 40% of the population has access to the fibre footprint, but the dominant network has been recently upgraded to compete with DSL, thus providing a viable alternative. In 2008 the number of fixed broadband subscribers (million) was 17.7%. This has increased to 21.7% in 2010.

By 2020, broadband is expected to provide 70% of France’s population with a 100Mb/s service due to promised investment from the government. This will propel France to the forefront of Europe’s digital economy and France will compete with the rest of the world in terms of its internet usage as shown through a selection of statistics.

Digital Life will continue to monitor the internet usage of France and the rest of the world via statistics; instigating surveys related to internet usage in order to derive accurate statistics, and forecasting statistics pertaining to internet usage trends. With these projected developments in place, France is set to outrival the rest of Europe in terms of its internet usage. You can be sure that Digital Life will bring you this information via a selection of internet statistics, as and when it becomes available.
