March 25, 2013 Sports No Comments

When it was announced that Qatar was to be the host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup there was much to be said around the issue. The sovereign Arab state is not usually known for its prevalence in the world of international football. One thing they are well known for is the extreme temperatures that are reached throughout the year, which begs the question whether they were the most appropriate choice for the honour, ousting competitors USA, Australia, Japan and Korea. However, most of the doubts that enthusiasts for the game may have had before might now be quashed after they see the plans for the Qatar stadiums. Work shoes will be hitting the designated sites this year to commence construction.

brazil world cupThe construction of the Brazil World Cup stadiums are on schedule, that is according to FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke after his visit to sites ahead of the 2013 Confederation Cup and the Brazil FIFA World Cup. Valke recently completed a three day trip to inspect the construction in various host cities, and to discuss preparations with Brazilian organisers.

After a board meeting of the local organizing committee in Rio de Janeiro, Valke stated that his greatest source of satisfaction was that the events were getting closer. After seeing the progress of the work in Cuiaba and Manaus, two host cities of the Brazil World Cup, he was convinced that progress was going to plan; workers in hi vis vests, engineers and officials have worked hard to reach these impressive results. The only Brazil World Cup host city that needs more work is Recife, which is also the host of the Confederations Cup next year. However, FIFA official will continue to monitor the progress closely. The deadline for Recife as well as Salvador is set for November. The Confederations Cup, the warm up tournament for the Brazil World Cup, will also be hosted by Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, Recife and Fortaleza.

The London 2012 Olympic Games

The London 2012 Olympic Games have officially started today and the city is teeming with spirit and excitement. To kick off, or shall I say to tee off celebrations, two heavy weight golfers, Sergio Garcia and Dustin Johnson joined in the celebrations and teed off a floating platform in an attempt to hit a hole in one on a floating target in the River Thames in London.

Golfing Heavyweights

The golfer’s difficult swing was in celebration of golf being included for the first time in 100 years, in the 2016 Olympic Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro. The famous golfing pair just added to the excitement that is running through the city due to the London Olympic Games and many spectators, golfing enthusiasts and people enjoying a party boat on the River Thames, cheered the golfers on. The successful golfers just finished participating in the Open tournament and tried out their sea legs and golfing skills on the iconic River Thames. Both of the golfers found the shot relatively hard with Garcia saying, ‘Courses usually don’t move this much, but it’s definitely going to be fun.’ Johnson didn’t find it all that much fun though, as he watched a number of shots bounce of the platform and into the river.
