Scientists Discover ‘Super Vision’ in Hearing Loss Patients

March 12, 2013 Health No Comments

Scientists have discovered that people with hearing loss from birth have a more developed vision than those with full hearing capabilities. The ‘super-vision’ of people who are deaf from birth assists them in tracking moving objects much faster than the average person with hearing.

Study

It’s common for other senses to be heightened when we lose the use of one, and scientists believed the hearing loss helps the brain adapt by actually rewiring itself to compensate by heightening the sight. The parts of the brain centred around the sound that are out of commission means the brain works harder to improve the vision, which helps with improving memory as it become photographic as opposed to audio.

It’s a fact, obesity in the UK is a big issue that’s getting worse; presently one in every four adults is obese. The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges has issued a report in which they call for a number of urgent measures like a 20% tax on sugary drinks, a ban on unhealthy foods in hospitals and fewer fast food outlets near schools.

How do you know you’re obese?

According to the NHS a person’s BMI or Body Mass Index is used to determine whether they are obese or not. BMI is calculated by taking your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared. Having a BMI between 25 and 29 is considered as being overweight, between 30 and 40 is rated as obese and over 40 as morbidly obese (yes, by then it is life threatening).

At least 60% of US soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan report hearing problems caused by the myriad of loud noises they were exposed to from helicopters to gun fire to bomb  blasts. JS Online reports that tinnitus (a ringing in the ears) and hearing loss are now more prevalent than PTSD (post-traumatic-stress-disorder).

Scientists have been working on ways to improve hearing in affected veterans and have come up with a few possible remedies: nutraceuticals, magnetoencephalography (MEG), cochlear implants and the the Baha System to mention a few.

Why is noise induced hearing loss a problem?

According to Dr Seideman, director of the Division of Otologic/Neurotologic Surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Henry Ford Hospital, noise-induced hearing loss can impact a person’s balance and sleep as well as potentially increasing blood pressure and sugar as well. That’s additional to the obvious issues relating to hearing and communication.

Call to Prevent Hearing Damage in Teens

February 14, 2013 Health No Comments

hearing-damage-headphonesChildren and teens around the world are experiencing noise-induced hearing damage earlier than ever before. According to the World Health Organisation, hearing loss is the most prevalent sensory disability worldwide – and while injuries, ailments and simply ageing can affect one’s ability to hear, the leading cause of damaged hearing is exposure to excessive noise.

Modern Life is Loud

In some cases, sensorineural hearing loss is genetic, but our increasingly urbanised and noise-filled environment plays a growing part in the health of our ears. According to a study recently conducted by a team of educators in Maharashtra, India, 75% of students surveyed are exposed to high levels of noise pollution every day and run an increased risk of hearing damage. Across the pond, the American Academy of Pediatrics estimates that fifteen in one thousand young people (aged younger than eighteen) exhibit symptoms of hearing loss.

LSTN Headphones are unique in that they have components that are made from reclaimed wood. The scrap wood pieces are often sourced from local furniture makers and would otherwise be thrown away.
