photographyPlenty of Talent on Show

London seems to be a hub of photographic activity lately, from private shoots with a baby photographer to various public exhibits and awards shows. Apart from the Sony World Photography Awards occurring in April, there are a host of other sights to see. Here are a few that might catch your eye, so to speak.

Somerset House

Somerset House is currently showcasing an exhibit celebrating landscape photography, featuring the work of 49 photographers. The exhibition is divided into 10 categories, based on the different ideas used to approach the concept of landscape. The display is hosted in conjunction with the Positive View Foundation, an organization that supports public exhibitions of contemporary photography, and training programmes for disadvantaged youth.

Members of the international construction industry recently flocked to Saudi Arabia for the third annual Big 5 Saudi construction show. The four day event, held at the Jeddah Centre, spanned two halls; hosting 550 exhibitors from 36 different countries. On show were new technologies, heavy machinery, mezzanine flooring and fit-outs. A variety of workshops were also held.

Construction is thriving again in Saudi Arabia

The Middle East Technical Review revealed that a recently commissioned report, entitled ‘Saudi Construction Market: Unveil Opportunities Ahead’, indicates that the construction of water and power utilities and real estate represent the two largest sectors in the industry. Water and power is responsible for 32.9% and real estate for 32.2% of all construction.

Andy White, group event director for DMG,  told the Review “We see a real interest from the international market, with many looking to find out more about the market, key trends as well as present their products and services to potential buyers”.

Concrete Jewelry Wins Red Dot Award

Austrian jeweler extraordinaire, Thomas Hauser, has won an international Red Dot Award for his concrete and palladium jewelry.

“Concrete has incredibly beautiful aesthetics. As a material it can do a lot more than you would think”, Hauser told The Register. Thomas certainly knows what he’s talking about; where most jewelers fashion diamond rings or use metal inlays to adorn their rings, he’s using strips of concrete in black, grey and white.

It requires a special process

Working from Atelier Allure in Vienna, Hauser is able to fashion his contemporary designer rings because of a new process developed at the Technische Universität Wien (Vienna University of Technology), which allows the concrete to be applied as a coating.

How it works

For those who prefer more traditional jewelry Thomas also creates ruby rings and the like, but his current passion is clearly for concrete. Thomas fashions his ring out of palladium (a rare silvery-white metal) after which he literally sprays on a number of coatings of concrete, creating the ‘focal’ point of the design.

Idaho Suffers Worst Ice Storm in Thirty Years

Ice stormsAs Britain deals with snow bombs and snowed under homes, cars and freeways, Idaho in the United States has just had to content with an ice storm that left Southern Idaho into a beautiful danger. Homes, roads, cars and nature are all covered in a thick layer of slippery ice measuring up to 0.5 inches.

Causes

A hard shell of ice coats ever part of Southern Idaho thanks to rain that was supposed to thaw the big freeze they had recently. Well, that didn’t work out as planned. The cause of this ice storm is rain that fell and as it passed through the cooler under layer it was exceptionally cold when it hit the freezing ground, as such each drop turning into icicles and droplets. The ice storm effectively covered everything and has made it a dangerous chore for anyone to leave their home. Walking to the mailbox is a dangerous expedition for anyone who doesn’t have proper hiking boots with spikes
