The Light Surgeons Arrive in the UK

The Light Surgeons, best described as audio visual artists, are on the way to the UK to showcase their special method of documentary filmmaking. Their show, dubbed “SuperEverything” was funded by the British Council and high-profile Malaysian musicians. The Light Surgeons, with the skill of an AV specialist, combine string instruments, live video mixing and recorded gamelan music to create a performance unlike any other.

From East to West

The show is centered around the topics of race, British colonial history and identity in Malaysia. Creative Director Chris Allen explained that “Malaysia is a very interesting country. It is a very young country, partly formed by British colonial involvement fifty years ago. It is still very divided in terms of cultures and as a result has a bit of an identity crisis”. Essentially, the performance examines the state of the country as it stands, which is particularly significant since Malaysia will undergo a general election later on in the year.

A Hertfordshire local recently discovered 40 Roman coins that date back to 408AD. The novice treasure hunter’s plunder has been valued at £100,000 pounds. Stunned by his lucky find, the man discovered the gold Solidi with an entry-level metal detector and a pair of Dickies coveralls he’d purchased just a few weeks before.

His initial haul just scraped the surface of the collection, which was later discovered to consist of 159 coins in total. With each coin weighing at 22 carat gold, the British Museum has already released generous figures that value each piece between £400 and £1,000.

The treasure hunter, who is really more of a hobbyist, is reported to have bought a Garrett Ace 150 metal detector, which retails at around £135 and is marketed as a ‘great children’s gift.’ The basic piece of equipment that detected the rare coins has made the find even more impressive – giving a whole new meaning to the saying ‘needle in a haystack.’
