eva personThe late Eva Peron, wife of populist Argentinean President Juan Peron and herself a leader of her people, has been exalted in books, biographies, a Broadway music and even a movie starring Madonna. However, last week Eva Peron’s memory was etched further into the Argentinean psyche after her image appeared on the 100 peso note. It marks a historic moment for Argentina, as it is the first time in the country’s history that a female image has appeared on a note. Forex brokers have valued the note at $22.

The image of Eva Peron, otherwise known as Evita, on the new 100 Peso note was in commemoration of her death 60 years ago last week Thursday. A ceremony was hosted by current president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner on the eve of Evita Peron’s passing anniversary. The President made it clear that the Evita Peron peso note should not be temporary, but should rather replace the current note featuring 19th century president Julio Argentino Roca. She stated, “It seems to me to be an homage that we owe not only to her but to ourselves”.

Malta Makes a Move into European Law via the EPLO

Big news for European Law as Malta hopes to find itself a permanent member of the European Public Law Organisation after the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tonio Borg, announced plans for Malta’s application. This came about at the second annual EPLO Malta Conference; considering the timing and the venue the announcement is apt and perhaps not a surprise. It was explained by Dr. Borg that becoming a member of the EPLO would be a benefit to Malta since it would offer economic growth and development through the analysis and review of public European law in a way to promote European values. These include aspects of tourism law, Malta residence law and other topics of interest that make a massive difference to the country in relation to the rest of Europe. The adopting of many European law journals should become relevant to Malta now.

The London 2012 Olympic Games

The London 2012 Olympic Games have officially started today and the city is teeming with spirit and excitement. To kick off, or shall I say to tee off celebrations, two heavy weight golfers, Sergio Garcia and Dustin Johnson joined in the celebrations and teed off a floating platform in an attempt to hit a hole in one on a floating target in the River Thames in London.

Golfing Heavyweights

The golfer’s difficult swing was in celebration of golf being included for the first time in 100 years, in the 2016 Olympic Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro. The famous golfing pair just added to the excitement that is running through the city due to the London Olympic Games and many spectators, golfing enthusiasts and people enjoying a party boat on the River Thames, cheered the golfers on. The successful golfers just finished participating in the Open tournament and tried out their sea legs and golfing skills on the iconic River Thames. Both of the golfers found the shot relatively hard with Garcia saying, ‘Courses usually don’t move this much, but it’s definitely going to be fun.’ Johnson didn’t find it all that much fun though, as he watched a number of shots bounce of the platform and into the river.

Brainstorm Cell Therapeutics has formally released their clinical data anlysis for stem cell ALS trials in the US. The report shows that the trial was an outstanding success, and that the stem-cell therapy was primarily well-tolerated by patients who participated.

The clinical data interim safety review showed that the treatment appears to be safe at this stage, and doesn’t seem to present any undue risks. For those who are new to ALS, the condition is more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, and is a progressive neurodegenerative illness that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

Clinical data analysts said research “could not be ignored”

The Brainstorm Israeli-branch, which is busy developing the NurOwn for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), has noted that it is “uncommon” to give clinical efficacy data at such an early point in the trial. Moshe Neuman, CEO of the Biomedical Research Design, defended the move however; pointing out that the individual improvement of participants who are affected by the disease could not be ignored.

Google Antitrust Allegations Will be Resolved through Settlement

googleThe Google antitrust law suit initiated by the European Commission is likely to become a precedent for other countries, including the United States, to lay charges against the search giant for its alleged biased operations. According to reports, Google may be heading towards some kind of settlement with European regulators, which will in essence allow the company to avoid formal antitrust measures by simply paying a fine. The European Commission has released media statements claiming that the two parties are currently engaging in antitrust talks that will avert a two year investigation into Google’s potential abuse of power.

Other regulators are also currently also probing into Google antitrust allegations, the Federal Trade Commission has for almost one year been investigating whether Google harms competitors and officials in Argentina South Korea and India have also launched Google antitrust lawsuits of their own. However, the European Commission Google antitrust case will act as a base for these other nations to work from, as Google cannot offer these countries anything less than what they offer Europe in its antitrust lawsuit.
