Machine Translation Cracks 18th Century Cipher

Scientists have been using a machine translation system and have managed to crack an 18th century cipher, believed to have been written by a German secret society. The team, comprising of both of both American and Swedish scientists, managed to crack the code containing both Roman and Greek numerals alongside other symbols by using a statistical machine translation system, much like those found in online Google translation systems. This statistical system, which differs from professional language translation, was found to be the best method of breaking the cipher by eliminating known symbols. After many different methods attempted, the 75,000 character code was finally cracked and the leather bound document which had been housed in East Berlin up until now, analysed and studied.
