Small Breakthrough with New HIV Vaccine

Although not a cure for the human immunodeficiency virus, researchers in Spain have made a small breakthrough with a new HIV vaccine that may one day reduce the effect of the virus on the human body. The new vaccine is known as MVA-B and is a variation on the vaccine that used was used to treat and eventually eliminate the smallpox pandemic in the 20th century.

 

Testing with these new HIV vaccines was done by manipulating the smallpox vaccine to carry four HIV genes and then administered to 24 healthy volunteers to see how their immune systems responded to the vaccine. During the trials at least 90% of the volunteers developed an immune response against HIV, while a year after being administered the vaccine 85% of the volunteers continue to show a positive response.

Star Olympic Sailing Selection for Great Britain

The first selections for the Great Britain Olympic sailing team were announced today, and it comes as no surprise that three-time gold medallist Ben Ainslie is among the eleven athletes selected to participate in the 2012 Olympics. Ainslie hopes that the London games next year will see him cruising to his fourth gold medal, especially as the Olympic sailing events will take place on the familiar waters of Weymouth and Portland.
